Black Gold is tucked in between the Chino Hills State Park and the Vista Del Verde residential community on the north side of Yorba Linda off either Yorba Linda Blvd or Imperial Highway. The name for the course comes from the fact that it's built over an abandoned Shell Oil Company oil field.

The golf course occupies a scenic setting with views of the valley floor, the Pacific Ocean, and Catalina Island on a clear day. The routing is along broad, tree lined fairways over rolling hills with several water features in play and the liberal use of sand bunkers at the landing zones and defending the mid-to-large, contoured greens. It can play to 6,756 yards, 73.1/133, course/slope ratings from the tips with four other tee boxes, designed by Arthur Hills.
