Pipestem is located on a plateau at the edge of Bluestone River Canyon an hour south of Beckley.

The golf course is an extremely hilly, tree lined layout meandering around rock outcroppings in a scenic setting in the park. There's an abundance of sand bunkering along the landing zones and defending the greens as well as a couple of water hazards. It plays to 6,884 yards from the tips, 72.5/125, course/slope ratings with three shorter tee boxes, designed by Geoffrey Cornish in 1966.
