Northwood is located on Ca 116 along the Russian River between Buerneville and Monte Rio.

The golf course was designed as an amenity to the nearby Bohemian Club Grove by Alister McKenzie between his work on Cypress Point and Augusta National. The fairways are lined with redwoods and generally narrow with a modest amount of sand bunkers defending the modest and contoured, raised greens. The layout is relatively short at 5,786 yards, 67.8/114, course/slope ratings from the back tees for 18 holes.
