The Island is 14 miles southwest of downtown Baton Rouge along a bend in the Mississippi River partially bordering a residential development in Plaquemine.

The layout was carved out of a sugar plantation in fact sugar cane still grows in the fields adjoining the course to the north. It's surrounded by water with the Bayou Jacob bordering the north and Bayou Placquemine to the South. There's nine lakes with water on almost every hole and 54 sand bunkers yet it's fairly forgiving off the tee with broad landing zones. The course was designed by Mike Young and plays to a total yardage of 7,010 yards from the professional tees, 75.1/143, course/slope ratings but with four shorter sets of tees.
