Hawktree is just 15 minutes northeast of Bismarck in a mostly natural setting between the Missouri River and US 83.

The course is over rolling hills with water features and native grasses bordering the fairways in an isolated setting. It's visually stunning and entertaining with the elevation changes and the contrasts of colors along separate and unique fairways. One of its distinctive features is the black sand or coal slag in the bunkers which is fine grained like sand, but doesn't provide the spin of usual sand traps. The fairways are framed by the tall grasses and mounding of the natural terrain while the greens are generous and undulating, well protected by numerous bunkers. The Falcon tees are 7,085 yards, 75.2/137, course/slope ratings, the Hawk tees are 6,444 yards, 72.1/130, course/slope ratings with two shorter tees, designed by James Engh in 2000.
