Gamble Sands is located just outside Brewster on the banks of the Columbia River.
The layout, built on a sand base like traditional links courses, is a wide-ranging design with firm and fast, broad fairways bordered by natural areas, sage, desert brush, waste, and conventional sand bunkers. It's a natural setting with stunning views across the Columbia River without homes, roads, or cart paths interrupting the scenery. The greens are large, sloped, contoured, and well-protected by sand bunkers. There are five sets of tees overall, the tips play to 7,169 yards, 74.2/128, course/slope ratings, with the middle tees at 6,207 yards, 69.7/118. It was designed by David McLay Kidd, who's known for designing Bandon Dunes, The Castle Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, and Tetherow, among others.
The Quicksands course is a 14-hole short course on a 25-acre tract of tumbling sand dunes designed by Kidd. The holes range from 60 to 160 yards and have been named Plinko, Boomerang, Crater, and Corkscrew, among others, to foreshadow the hole's challenge.
The Scarecrow is a regulation 18 with the front beginning inland from the river, finishing with a par 3 of overwhelming views. The back nine borders gulches and the river’s edges with a 20-mile view down the river towards the town of Pateros on the 10th. All in all, the layout is more dramatic, featuring significant elevation changes throughout. There are six sets of tees from 4,656 to 6,921 yards; the regular tees play to 6,061 yards, 69.1/119, course/slope ratings, designed by David McLay Kidd and Nick Schaan.
