Cypress Creek is across the James River from Newport News and Hampton in Smithfield, off US 258, in a residential development

The course winds through the community, featuring a mix of unique holes set along narrow and broad fairway corridors lined with trees. There are all kinds of trouble, including conventional and waste sand bunkers, numerous water hazards, and an "Amen Corner" with holes 15-17 that provide a fitting finish to the round. It was designed by Ault, Clark & Associates, and Curtis Strange, and from the Champion tees is par 72, 74.5/134, course/slope ratings at 7,047 yards with three shorter tees.
